The dating websites of five European countries have organised the Olympics of speed-dating. Singles Week has seized the French ski resort of Avoriaz by her breasts - and I am here, wearing a bobble hat. So what is it like, this cold buffet of Euro-love? When I arrive in Avoriaz, it looks like a pile of snow covered with Stasi interrogation bunkers. It appears to be empty. So I stumble to the tourist office, convinced the man of my dreams is waiting, in a matching bobble hat. Everything is covered in hearts and it is very cold. The singles, I am told by a snooty Parisian blonde, are all "air-dating". Air dating? Speed-dating on ski lifts. She waves me to the Wall. The Wall is covered with Polaroids of singles from France, Italy, Germany, the UK and Holland. They look out grimly, like missing persons, or persons with something missing.
Owner is cited for tree removal
I'm all for protecting our heritage and keeping our city clean! But I remember a few years back when there was a bad snow and one of the trees the city planted along 8th street broke and went through a property owner's front window and he called the city about it. The city told him there was nothing they could do because they didn't want to pay for the window and told him it was his tree so he cut it down!!! There wasn't a shade tree commission then I don't think but since there is one now they should take care of the other problems I see in the city there are trees that hang in front of stop signs, there are trees that have rotten limbs, and trees that are about to bring down power lines!! what is being done about this??? If this happens to another property owner are they going to be told it's your tree and another tree is cut down, and who will pay for the damage?????? .
MLB Commissioner Selig to Speak at Bethany College Graduation
Miller said Monday. ‘‘As the state's oldest private college, Bethany has been a small college of national distinction,'' Miller said. ‘‘It is fitting and proper that our graduates have the opportunity to hear firsthand from the leader of our national pastime.'' Selig was elected the ninth commissioner of baseball on July 9, 1998, by a unanimous vote of the 30 Major League Baseball club owners. Credited for keeping baseball in Milwaukee, Selig, a Milwaukee native, was the team owner and president of the Milwaukee Brewers prior to being becoming commissioner. After the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta in 1965, Selig founded Teams Inc. The group, which later changed its name to The Brewers, was an organization dedicated to returning Major League baseball to Milwaukee. In 1970, a Seattle bankruptcy court awarded the Seattle Pilots franchise to Selig and his investors.
STATEHOUSE: Rep. Jones pushes Internet safety policies for public ...
BOSTON — You can lock the doors and windows, hold their hand at the mall and buy training wheels for bicycles. But a major danger facing kids today is right above the keyboard. "The Internet is one of the biggest risks we have for kids safety right now," said Lawrence Lt. Sean Burke, who is president of a national school safety group. And, a North of Boston lawmaker wants to make sure the time kids spend on school computers is safer. Rep. Bradley H. Jones Jr., R-North Reading, is pushing legislation to require every school district to have a policy for making the Internet safe for minors and make the policy known to parents and legal guardians. "It's important that any parent be able to know what (the school system's) policy is, and even if there is no policy in particular," Jones said.
Loyola boys' soccer team advances in shootout
Loyola of Los Angeles' goalkeeper John Bunkall stopped two penalty kicks and led the host Cubs to a 4-1 shootout win Wednesday against Long Beach Wilson in Southern Section Div. I wild-card action. Bunkall stopped Wilson's second and third attempts, and his teammates did the rest as the Cubs defeated the Bruins after the teams fought through four 10-minute overtime periods with the score tied at 1-1. "I just reacted and I went with my gut decision," Bunkall said. "Thank goodness our guys scored, if they didn't score it wouldn't have meant anything. It was an exciting game and hopefully we'll come out strong against Santa Margarita." The Cubs (16-5-7) travel to top-seed Santa Margarita (16-3-4) Friday for a rematch of last year's Div. I final, which ended in a 1-1 tie. "We played Wilson last year when they were the No.
