God forbid this country should ever become a "fully paid up member" of the EU. Being British I have the experience of before and after the fact as it affects the UK. Do you really want to go down the UK route and that of all the other members; high unemployment, greater national debt, ever increasing immigration problems, increased crime, escalating terrorism, reduced health service, armed services made up of publicity seeking juveniles and incompetents, corrupt officials offering "favours" for backhanders, national resources being controlled by others, etc, etc .....

Exactly what would Norway gain by joing the EU compared to what the country would lose ?

Instead of the media only reporting on the story of some publicity seeking politician raising the positive aspects of Norway joining the EU ...

Down-to-earth fashions

Four years later, the Harvard School of Public Health found a significant link between exposure to pesticides and Parkinson's disease. And the National Safety Council warns that applying pesticides and fertilizers on crops sends particulate matter airborne, and when breathed in it can lead to respiratory problems.

"You think about the rise in asthma and allergies and skin conditions and it's impossible not take notice of that connection," says Marci Zaroff, a mother of two tweens who founded the Under the Canopy organic clothing brand in 1996.

Among the brand's specialties is casual wear for women and babies (the latter of which is sold at Macy's and, soon, BabyStyle) with plans for a tween line.

In addition to the finished product, Under the Canopy makes all of its own fabrics - a business model known as farm to finish.

Gripe of the Week: 99 B-Line bus passups on January 29 equal volume of ...

The snowy morning of January 29 was not kind to transit riders.

It was especially unkind to those, like this reporter, who chose to take the Über-busy 99 B-Line bus to work rather than risk a bicycle accident.

What transpired at the intersection of Clark Drive and East Broadway was ugly. Time for a quick bus riders rewind…

Around 8:30 a.m., rolling into the exposed bus shelter at Broadway and Clark, on the northwest corner of that intersection, it was strange to see people lined up behind the shelter, out of the view of the road. That is because the slush and muck of the slowly-melting ice and sludge was being sprayed all over us by every passing vehicle in the slow lane. People were covered in muck, and the 99s creaking to a halt were all packed full of people who got on at Commercial Drive.

Revealed: the mystery man behind canal safety signs

As we're in a group only the leader will sound their bell."British Waterways has now erected signs restricting cyclists to top speeds of 6mph"Doubt I will use the waterways now. This speed restriction equates to a journey of 12 hours to get to Falkirk Wheel and back (ordinarily 6 hours); a real shame. I've been using them for years with no animosity whatsoever."I would hide behind something to see if people were stopping to look at them."Kudos for your clean-up operation but I doubt anyone wants to be snooped upon in this fashion. It may also lead to some very tricky questioning if caught. .

The best books of 2007.

We can't very well expect books to change our lives, but they should certainly poke us now and then. Tom Hodgkinson's The Freedom Manifesto, a sequel to his cult classic How To Be Idle, presents its credos as a lark: Play the Ukulele! Death to the Supermarkets! Stop Moaning! Fling Open Your Doors! But the joshing tone belies a work of crafty scholarship and radical intent. Hodgkinson leafs through various malcontent movements including the Stoics, the situationists, and the back-to-the-landers to "bring three strands of thought together into a philosophy for everyday life; these are freedom, merriment, and responsibility." (Hodgkinson is an existentialist.) He finds his intellectual groove in a bohemian appreciation of the medieval, a time when workers had autonomy, beer was spiced with berries, and merchants were looked down upon as ungodly and crude.

Teen 'beggar' kills Pakistan's surgeon general in suicide attack

A teenage boy allegedly dressed as a beggar blew himself up Monday near a military vehicle carrying the Pakistani Army's surgeon general; seven other people also were killed. Meanwhile, gunmen burst into the offices of a British-based aid group in northwest Pakistan, shooting four local staffers to death and burning down their building.

The assaults, both blamed on Islamic extremists, were the most serious outbreak of violence since parliamentary elections a week ago, in which the ruling party affiliated with President Pervez Musharraf was routed by two main opposition parties.

In the attack that killed Lt. Gen. Mushtaq Ahmed Baig, the army's top medical officer, the "beggar" approached the general's car on foot on a busy street in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, authorities said.
