Saratoga bus route overhaul beats expectations

But just over seven months into the expanded venture, ridership on CDTA's Saratoga system has almost tripled, surprising even those who designed the new service.

"We nearly tripled ridership by doubling the amount of service available," said Carm Basile, CDTA's deputy executive director for business development. "It's phenomenal, the number of riders we have seen."

The most stunning ridership increase has been along the Route 50 corridor between Schenectady and Saratoga Springs, where the number of trips each day, Monday through Saturday, was increased from two in each direction to 18. Sunday service also was initiated.

Meanwhile, the Route 50 route, which used to end in Ballston Spa, was stretched farther north to Saratoga Springs, finally giving Saratoga residents a link to the rest of CDTA's network in Schenectady, Albany and Troy.

Ronnie Thomson Touched Many Lives

MACON, GA (BRAIN)Ronnie Thomson didn't live to see 69 this Thursday, but he did live long enough to touch everyone in the bicycle industry including most of all his employees. "Ronnie always said the best marketing was to have the best product," said The L.H. Thomson Company marketing manager David Parrett. "He expected the very best out of all of us and anyone who did business with us." Thomson passed away in the middle of the night at his home over the weekend. Parrett said that Thomson was recovering from bladder cancer, but said his "sudden" death had nothing to do with that, and more likely was a "stroke or heart attack." "Ronnie was always like a father figure," said Karen Glass, accounts coordinator for the company, who had known Thomson for almost 10 years. "I know this will be a rough road for the entire Thomson family.

Rehabilitation machine helps patients who've lost use of legs exercise

Under the supervision of New Directions Wellness Center Director James Laskin, Corinne Spencer works the pedals of the new Ergys 2 machine at the University of Montana's School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science on Tuesday. Using electrical stimulation, the machine allows paraplegics and quadriplegics to exercise their legs.

Should officers use tasers?

They are Wade Erickson, trooper since October 1999; Jon Froemke, trooper since December 2007; Brian Helget, trooper since December 2007; Tim Koehler, trooper since May 2000, and Troy McCormack, trooper since June 1994.

Prior to receiving a Taser, troopers must complete a two-day training course, and they must complete a one-day recertification course annually. Trooper training standards exceed the manufacturers recommendations.

A patrol spokesman would not describe what kind of "uncooperative" behavior was involved.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.

"This is a traumatic event for a lot of people," superintendent Tim O'Malley said. "Someone has died and in fairness to that person, the troopers, family members and others who may have been affected, we need to make sure that we're accurate and thorough."

The man who died was identified as Mark C.

US prospects good for 2010 Games

FIGURE SKATING (2/2): Even though the Russians are a shadow of what they were two years ago and the Canadians have disappeared, getting back on the gold standard will be tough for the Americans, who didn't hear their anthem last time. If the Hello Kitty Generation (Mirai Nagasu, Caroline Zhang, Rachael Flatt) matures or former world champ Kimmie Meissner rights herself, the women at least should get a silver. So should dancers Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, who did it in 2006. That could be all, though. Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir will be on the downside of their careers in 2010, when Wakefield's Stephen Carriere could be the man. And the pairs won't break the Chinese hammerlock. As the sport has become more aerial, the Asians are on the rise.

ICE HOCKEY (1/1): It could be a Canadian sweep, especially given home ice.
