Keep it simple on Egg Harbor Rd.

Business owners on Egg Harbor Road want to see the city of Sturgeon Bay keep any reconstruction of the high traffic road as simple as possible.

The city sent a letter out to Egg Harbor Road business and property owners Jan. 31 informing them of a public meeting scheduled for Feb. 5.

On the docket were staff recommended road surface improvements and a two way left turn lane in the center of the road for the 3,000 foot stretch between the Georgia Street/8th Avenue intersection and the 14th Avenue intersection.

Estimated project cost for reconstructing the road surface and creating the TWLTL was $575,000.

In addition to discussing options for improving the road surface were such infrastructure options as constructing pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths/lanes, traffic flow improvement and storm water management.

Winter storms at both ends of the country dump snow, snarl travel

CHICAGO (AP) — Winter storms at both ends of the country dumped snow and snarled air and land travel Friday, killing at least 10 people, blocking major highways and even stranding 400 train passengers in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

Nearly 7 1/2 inches of snow was reported at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport before the front moved out of the area Friday. About 500 flights were canceled at O'Hare, which canceled 600 flights Thursday and housed hundreds of stranded travelers who spent the night awaiting planes from other cities also affected by the storm.

At least 12 inches of snow was reported in Springfield by Friday morning, said National Weather Service meteorologist Gino Izzi. Other parts of Illinois saw similar amounts.

"If you don't have to be out here, don't," Ty Wilson, a very wet Chicago bicycle messenger, said as he stopped along a slushy street between morning deliveries.

Shake-up coming to ferry system

The goal is a ferry system that is financially viable, works better with the communities it serves and is prepared for the future, "not the one that everybody loves to love because we've had it so long," she said.

Hammond said Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed her to overhaul the ferry system, and she views state legislators as key partners in addressing challenges, particularly in finding a way to pay to build new boats to replace the 18 ferries that likely must be retired as the fleet ages over the next three decades.

Hammond said she never again wants the ferry system to find itself trying to keep old ferries afloat while planners are "treading water," spending a lot of time and money designing new vessels that don't get built.

While Hammond expects some people will leave the ferry system as she begins making changes, she added "I have just as many people cheering me on within that organization ...

Junkyard dealer arrested for fraud

A Fleischmanns junkyard dealer was arrested Tuesday for allegedly fraudulently insuring and registering cars for illegal immigrants.

William Hrazanek, 61, of Old Route 28, was arrested by Mark Howard, an investigator with the state Insurance Department Frauds Bureau.

Hrazanek was charged with insurance fraud and offering a false instrument for filing. He could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted, officials said in a media release.

He is accused of fraudulently providing insurance and auto registrations for used cars with high mileage that he sold to unlicensed drivers, allegedly earning tens of thousands of dollars each year from the practice.

He was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Delaware County Court on March 12.
